Blue Note @ 70 mix

Posted in Blue Note, Jazz, Mix, SPIRITUAL on June 4, 2009 by orangeandblackspines

Sorry about the lack of posts over the last few weeks… Here at BC towers we’ve been busy needle dropping over 150+ Blue Note lps from our crates to select a tracklist for what we would define as our ultimate Blue Note tribute. A tribute that is worthy to the testimony that Blue note is 70 years young this year.

It mustn’t be understated just how important this milestone is for Jazz and for the greater good of Music as a Whole. We have tried to swerve the obvious tunes that tend to get dropped on comps like “The bestest Blue Note album in the whole wide world since the beginning of time ever part 6″ you know the ones; Song for my father, Sidewinder, Cantaloup Island, Congoralre, Blue Bossa, Maiden Voyage etc and concentrated on tunes that have been instrumental to us over the last 25 odd years.

Some of the tunes on here are over 50 years old and IMHO still sound as fresh and exciting as they must have done back in the day… And let’s not forget this fact people; This is Real Music made by Real Talent – people who mastered the art of their instruments which is sadly not seen that often in this day and age. Infact most of todays dedicated talent can be seen mainly busking on the streets to make a living — in between the odd studio session if they are really, really lucky…

Anyway, When we set out to do this comp, we wanted to do 70 tracks over 70 mins which looking back was a tad ambitious to say the least and am afraid we failed miserably on both budgets. 35 Tracks listed, 42 Used and some other little incidental bits… Plus it wouldn’t be a BC mix without a lil’bit of spoken word… Here is the righteous track listing:

His Blessings: McCoy Tyner
Pax: Andrew Hill
Wind: Wayne Shorter
How Much Does Matter Really Matter at all? Horace Silver
Motto Grosso: Wayne Shorter
Goodbye to Childhood: Herbie Hancock
Illusion: Andrew Hill
Christo Redentor: Donald Byrd
Inner Passion Out: Lee Morgan
Succotash: Herbie Hancock
Look At Teyonda (Astrological bit): William Norwood
The Coming Of Gwilu: Eddie Gale
Song of Will: Eddie Gale
Understanding: Eddie Gale
Fulton Street: Eddie Gale
Walk with Thee: Eddie Gale
The Gleeker: Eddie Gale
Look At Teyonda: Eddie Gale
The Rain: Eddie Gale
Malika: McCoy Tyner
Hope: McCoy Tyner
Now! Bobby Hutcherson
Forbidden Land: McCoy Tyner
Searchin’ The Trane: Bobby Hutcherson
Search for the New Land: Lee Morgan
On the Nile: Jackie McClean
The Creators: Bobby Hutcherson
Prayer: Solomon Ilori
Sweet Pea: Wayne Shorter
Appointment In Ghana: Jackie McClean
The Feast: Art Blakey
Buhaina Chant: Art Blakey
Elephant Walk: Art Blakey
The Phantom: Duke Pearson
Boom, Boomp, Choomp: The Sons

This is not a definitive list just what we could pack in… A nono-second of the 100’s more we just couldn’t get in and really wanted to; Slow Change, Had a little talk, Walk Tall, Happy People amongst others (next Jazz on a Sunday possibly) Huuummmmm so maybe the task is 7 mixes over 7 months would be more appropriate? LOL!!!

Special thanks to all those who contributed ideas in the comments and on Twitter to poke our failing fast middle aged memories due to too much booze. Really Special thanks go out to: Bacoso, Katonah, Wara Katsu, Arkadin, El Goog Ja, El Reza and of course Monohub… Finally, thanks to Blue Note and the artists living and departed for both the Education and Inspiration. So if you are new to Jazz or an old hand geek like those here at BC, enjoy the spiritual side of Blue Note…

Link as usual is in the comments.

Out 25 May 2009 on Wah Wah 45
# Wah CD012

Good friend of BC released his first lp yesterday and It’s brilliant sogo buy it…

People who also think its brill:

Wicked! I like that a lot. Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1)

Seriously good songs and sonics and arrangements. No one could tell these apart from The Cinematic Orchestra, and the strings are ammmmazing!! Aaron Jerome (BBE)

Some kind of world/folk music (people we spoke to), that is to say there are some elements in there. Some tracks sound like poppy soul tunes (warm sound) in a positive way. Top track is the singer/songwriter tune I have come to you. Seems like it will be a very diverse open minded longplayer. lots of organic elements. music with big potencies. Really looking forward to the album. Matthis Desch (Bogaloo, Germany)

Love it. Im really digging that acoustic breaks type vibe at the moment. Sounds like a Tim Bidwell production to me? Very similar strings. My favourite since the Hardkandy LP I reckon. DJ Griff (Jelly Jazz)
This is OUTSTANDING. 9/10 Mike Stukes (Mystic Vybes WHCR 90.3 FM, NYC)

I am really enjoying all these laid back songs from Scrimshire. I will add I Have Come To You for this weeks playlist. Other favorites are All Roads Lead You Home and People We Spoke To. Nice chill vibe on all tracks, perfect for my radio show. Looking forward to full release! Thanks. Roberto Gonzales (dj novasoul | labkids radio)

Big Shout to Scrimshire and his Crew of musicians and vocalists! Brilliant productions, really sensitive and well done!. Full Support on my radioshow. Enrique Domenech (Fusionova, Ibiza)

Massive fan of Scrimshire!! Great new album version of the stunning Warm Sound. The beautiful I Have Come To You is sublime, as is Springime & People We Spoke To. Top notch! Greg Clifford (Son Of Soul)
Wow! This is really blowing me away!!! Such wonderful and beautiful songs!!! My fave ones are Warm sound, I have come to you and the outstanding All roads lead you home! Simply amazing. Will play it out for sure !!! Markus Milz (Further In Fusion)

This is amazing, has had me listening to it constantly since it arrived in my inbox. Would really like to sort an interview with Scrimshire on the show as this fella has got the talent. Tunes getting repeats on my ipod and will be cained on this weeks show are Warm Sound & I Have Come To You. Beautiful. King Tee (The Elbow Rooms, London)

Good stuff! Played a couple on the radio last night. Matt Anderson

Blue Note 70 – Help Please?

Posted in Uncategorized on May 24, 2009 by orangeandblackspines

Im going to do a mix over the next few weeks — Blue Note is 70 years old so the concept:

70 tracks in 70 mins

it will be an ambitious cut and paste job like umojity, so as a favour, can you list in the comments some of your fave tracks for me to work with?

Here’s the meat to choose from:

10″ LPs – Modern Jazz 5000 Series
The Blue Note Modern Jazz Series began in late 1951 with the following 10″ monaural LPs. Some of these LPs were later reissued as part of the Blue Note 1500 Series of 12″ LPs. At first, recordings were made in various studios in New York (Reeves Sound Studio, WOR Studios, Apex Studios, Audio Video Studios). Beginning in October 1953, however, most Blue Note sessions took place in Rudy van Gelder’s home studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. (Van Gelder moved the studio to Englewood Cliffs in early July 1959.) The sessions were produced by Alfred Lion and engineered by Van Gelder, and many LP covers featured photographs by Lion’s childhood friend Francis Wolff.

Blue Note 1500 series
Blue Note made the change to 12″ LPs late in 1955. The Modern Jazz Series continued with the following 12″ LPs. Most of these were issued in both monaural versions (BLP series) and artificial stereo versions (BST 81000 series). Beginning in 1956 with BLP 1509, Reid Miles designed most of the Blue Note LP covers. Together with Alfred Lion’s production, Rudy van Gelder’s engineering, and Frank Wolff’s photography, Miles’ designs defined the Blue Note look and sound. The Blue Note 4000 series began in the mid-1950s with many of the same artists. The 1500 series has been systematically reissued by Toshiba in Japan (”Blue Note Works 1500″ series, 20-bit K2 CDs); the catalog numbers are TOCJ-1501, etc. In addition, originally unissued material from these late 50s dates was made available on Toshiba’s 1600 series (20-bit K2 CDs).

Blue Note 4000 Series
The Modern Jazz Series continued into the 1970s with the LPs listed below. Many were issued in both monaural versions (BLP series) and stereo versions (BST 84000 series). Beginning with 4258 (recorded March 14, 1961) all subsequent LPs (with three exceptions: 4263, 4264, and 4265) were issued only in stereo. By the late 60s Blue Note was changing: the label was sold to Liberty Records in 1965; Reid Miles and Alfred Lion retired by mid-1967; Frank Wolff died in 1971. But much of the best jazz of the early and mid-60s can be heard on Blue Note recordings. Most of the first 300 numbers of the 4000 series have been reissued by Toshiba in Japan (”Blue Note Works 4000″ series); the catalog numbers are TOCJ-4001, etc.
